Before I get to some pictures of our birthday celebration this weekend and a yummy recipe, I thought I'd share these pics to honor a local legend.

Here in Pennsylvania, there's a lot of mourning going on for Penn State's Joe Paterno, who passed away on Sunday morning. Wherever you live, I'm sure you've heard about it. It's all over the news. And regardless of some of the negative publicity surrounding Joe Pa in the last months, it seemed he was loved by everyone who new him.

Okay, now on to the birthday partay this weekend. We celebrated 3 birthdays...

Hubs turned.....well ....fifty something. I've lost count!!

Ashley turned 20. Can you imagine being
20 again?..and know what you know now??

Son in law Steve is twenty something. Let's just
say he can feel 30 nippin' at his heels!

Jack's Mama wouldn't give him any ice-cream cake because he didn't eat his dinner...

But when Mama wasn't looking, he snuck some of Pap Pap's cake.

I know you're thinking you could eat some of that ice-cream cake too. It was yummy.... and very sweet.

So here ya go.....this is the original recipe. I of course had to change some things.
I switched out the ice creams for chocolate and peanut butter cup because my kids don't like coffee. This recipe is by

Dulce De Leche-Mocha Ice Cream Dessert

INGREDIENTS:

Praline Crumbs

whole rectangular graham crackers

cup butter

cup firmly packed brown sugar

cup chopped pecans

Filling and Topping

quart (4 cups) dulce de leche ice cream, slightly softened

jar (16 oz) hot fudge ice cream topping

quart (4 cups) coffee ice cream, slightly softened

1 1/2

cups whipping cream

1/3

cup coffee-flavored liqueur

Heat oven to 350°F. Arrange crackers in single layer in ungreased 15x10x1-inch baking pan.
Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in brown sugar. Bring to a boil.
Boil 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in pecans. Pour and spread over crackers.
Bake 10 minutes. Cool 30 minutes or until cooled.
Crush crackers into coarse crumbs. Sprinkle half of crumbs in bottom of ungreased
13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish. Cut and remove carton from dulce de leche ice cream.
Cut ice cream into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Arrange slices over crumbs, overlapping slightly.
Spread ice cream with spatula until even pressing down firmly. Freeze 1 hour or until firm.
Place hot fudge ice cream topping in resealable 1-quart plastic bag. Cut small hole in bottom
corner of bag with topping. Squeeze bag to pipe fudge topping over ice cream. Scatter
remaining half of praline crumbs over fudge layer. Freeze 30 minutes or until fudge is firm.
Cut and remove carton from coffee ice cream. Cut ice cream into 1/2-inch-thick slices.
Arrange slices over crumbs, spreading ice cream until smooth; press down firmly. Freeze
while preparing topping.
Beat whipping cream in large bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold in liqueur. Spread over top
of dessert. If desired, garnish with chocolate curls. Freeze 4 hours or until firm. Let stand
at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before serving time.

Hey, it's a

NEW YEAR!

I know, I'm a little behind on the new year greetings. But that's okay.

I've been busy getting my new year off to a good start....

*The tree and the decorations are down...

I've made some plans and set some goals....

My goal for the new year is to focus on

LOVE.

That may sound a little strange. But 2 years ago I resolved to guard my mouth.....and keep my words sweet. I not only wanted to avoid saying things that I may wish I could take back, but I wanted to use my words for good.

But lately, because of some people that God has placed in my life, I thought it was time to work on

loving the unlovely.

You know, its easy to love lovely people....

But what about those who are

UNLOVELY!!??

You have them too- I know you do.

So I've decided its time to kick up my love walk to a new level by

SHOWING

love to others....all others!

The lovely

and

the unlovely!

So this year, I'm working on

I'm not sure yet what that's going to look like.

One things for sure, I'll be more mindful of others and their needs...

I'll be looking for ways to bless them.

*Our basement is on its way to becoming something other than a storage facility for our grown children's

STUFF...

For some reason, our children left home and forgot their stuff. But we're determined to get it all cleaned out, even if that means a

to their homes.

*And next week, hubs and I are planning to do some painting. We'll be painting our bedroom, bathroom and spare bedroom-which has been empty since our youngest

flew the coop.....

Our empty bedroom will soon become a room for the grandbabies

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And this week, we're going to be celebrating again!

We have 3 birthdays to celebrate in January. So we're just gonna have one big party and celebrate them at the same time.

Hopefully, next week I'll share some recipes from the celebration.

A friend of mine from the YMCA was sweet enough to give me an assembled gingerbread house for me and Jack to decorate. All I had to do was whip up some royal frosting.

We had a great time. I kept saying,

"No, don't eat it. Put it on the roof!"

Spreading the Joy

I've been really focused on keeping Joy in our Christmas this year. The kind of Joy that comes to us because of a baby born in a manger for ALL,

that we might have JOY!

I want Joy for myself, for my family and for all of those whose lives I'm able to touch in some small way.

So today, I wanted to share some of the things that are bringing
JOY

to our friends and family.........

Not only did I declare this to be a Christmas filled with Joy, but also a Christmas filled with fun......

I've declared this to be a

REDNECK Holiday!

Every year, I open up our home and become the

hostess with the mostess

for Hubby's family.

I enjoy it.

I enjoy going the extra mile each year.

I try to make it fun and enjoyable.

Here are just a few of the homemade gifts I've given over the last few years...

*tampon angels*

*herb and vanilla basket*

So this (redneck) year I made a chicken bag out of these feed bags for each family.....

My niece plans to be a Vet so I made hers from
this dog food bag.

......And filled each one with something

recycled,

reused,

repurposed,

redneck,

and/or homemade!

Here are a few samples

(keep in mind this was just for fun!)

These smelly earrings were crafted by using a
car freshener lei.

We had a lot of fun with the redneck gifts.

I also made an ornament for every family made from the feathers of our chickens and turkey. (Recycling at its best)

Jack and I made this to give to his mama and daddy.

I made this one for the snow lover in my life.

This may be my last post before Christmas, unless I find the time and energy to post some recipes. So I'd like to leave you with our Christmas card.

A Tour of our Christmas Decor

Everyone has their own way of decorating for the holiday season. For some, they go all out. They buy new stuff every year, with no regard for the cost. They just do it BIG! I'm guessing that these are the same folks with a ton of expensive gifts under their tree too. And perhaps a huge credit card bill.

Others, well their decorations are a bit scrooge-ish.

Either they are not "Christmas people,"

or perhaps there are just "things" going on in their lives that prevent them from

decking their halls....

But around here...we aim to

I'd be lying if I told you I never buy anything new. The fact is, I usually change things up just a little by picking up something new at Michaels or my favorite antique store for most every season.

But I consider that to be just

adding to my collection. (wink wink)

For the most part, we drag out the same decorations, year after year.

There is something comforting about the old traditional ornaments and decorations that hold family memories, isn't there?

If only they could speak, they'd tell some tall tales, huh?

The decorations we pull from old dusty boxes remind us of Christmases past. Some treasured, some...not so much. There's just something warm and fuzzy about those old decorations.

I have an old, most would say ugly, but definitely fake,

ball of mistletoe that I hang up every year. It has been part of my family since I was a child.

But every year I hang that darn thing; it stirs my heart and reminds me of

my childhood days.......a much simpler time!

Angels Among Us

T'is the season for ANGELS.

When you think of angels....

What comes to your mind?

During this season

while we're focused

on Christ's birth,

you may think of this....

the Angel of the Lord who

visited Mary.

Or Perhaps you think of one of these little cherubs.

And if you're like me

the thought of angels may conjure

up visions of grandchildren!

Recently, while listening to

the Eric and Erica radio show,

the topic of angels came up when they

posed this question....

Who are the Angels in your life?

Eric and Erica were inspired by

Dan Dewey,
a.k.a. as the
Coffee Angel.

USA Today article/video.)

While Dan's father was receiving cancer treatments he would make a coffee run to the local Starbucks. Although his father didn't wish to have coffee, many of the other patients who were trapped on their recliners, hooked up to infusion poles delighted in some Joe.

It became a tradition; every Thursday at 10 am, Dan would make a coffee run for the patients at the cancer center.

Today, even though Dan's father is no longer a patient, Dan continues to bless the patients (as well as the staff) with their favorite coffee every Thursday at 10 am.

Who is your Angel??

Who is the person or persons that have blessed you with small acts of kindness.

And an even better question...

Who have you blessed?

Is there anyone who can call you their Angel??

Little Acts of Kindness

can bless others in a BIG way!

One of the keys to being a blessing is to always be on the lookout for opportunities....

by getting our minds off ourselves!!.....

God presents us with opportunities everyday.

One of the lessons I learned while receiving chemo treatments for leukemia was

how to receive with grace.

Yep, I had to learn how to receive!

I was astounded by all the "angels" who came along side me (and my family) during those difficult days. I received cards, calls and prayers from people from Wisconsin to Florida.

I realized that folks just had a need to give of themselves.....to feel like they were doing something to help.

They needed to give something of themselves.

Being a blessing made them feel good.
The love and kindness they showed, made me feel good.

So I guess the bottom line is-

You're blessed when you're the giver

and blessed when you're the receiver.

Find someone to bless today.

The Confession

You've heard the old adage, Never ask a woman her age or her weight.

Not only is it rude and no ones business.. ....

We will never tell you the truth anyway!

But today, I'm gonna

fess up !

A week ago,

I turned 50!

I'm not sure how that happened.

It wasn't that long ago that I graduated from high school.....was it?

Me and hubs the night of graduation, 1979.
And NO we were not married yet.
Just madly in love!
ps..I'm not trying to snub the photographer on this pic.
They just snapped the pic before I was ready.

Or Got Married......

Where does time go?

Fast Forward.............

This was us on our front porch in 1997. We
were going out to dinner because in the
morning, hubs was leaving for WI to
begin a new job. The kids and I stayed
behind to pack up and sell the house.
We joined him 3mo later.

This photo was taken last Christmas. As you can see, all my good cookin'
has been catching up to me...

Soooo, with the big

in the cross hairs...

I decided to.....

I MADE MY MIND UP.....

THE TIME WAS NOW!!!...

to she all those extra pounds.

At the end of July, I began my weight loss journey.

And by Labor day, when the babies were baptized, I had already lost several pounds! I was feeling good, and motivated to keep going!

And today.....

though I won't reveal my weight;)....

I can tell you

HAPPILY

that I am 35 pounds lighter!!!

AHHHH.......Can u hear the sigh!

Merry Christmas to me!

I have to tell you, this was a huge accomplishment for me. I have tried and failed many times.

It wasn't until I just couldn't stand myself anymore, that I could muster up the mind set to make it happen.

I am in the pool several times a week teaching, yes teaching, water aerobics, and yet it wasn't until I made the commitment to change my eating habits that the pounds melted off.

I've had to say goodbye to some of my favorite foods, like....

sweets...

breads...

cheese....

and my main staple.....Mayonaise!

But it has been soooo worth it.

New Year's is around the corner. If you, like me, are in need of a weight loss attitude adjustment-

now is the time

to figure out how you will make it happen.

Believe me, if I can do it ~

You Can do It!

I may be

But I'm fit

and I'm ready for the rest of life's journey!

Finding Christmas Joy

Can you believe it? It’s that time of the year again when we have to squeeze the busyness of the Christmas holiday into the (already) small margins of our busy lives.

Sounds kind of Grinch-ish, huh?

In the Christmas story (Luke 2:8-14), the angel said,

“I bring you good news of Great Joy that will be for all people.”

What is JOY~

and how do we get it?

All too often, for many, Christmas is a source of pain and of sorrow. Circumstances and possibly even tragedies in their lives prevent them from experiencing the

Joy of Christmas.

For others, they just get so caught up in the hectic pace of the holidays and trying to live up to the expectations of others, that they forget the true meaning of Christmas. They’re mired by shopping lists, and parties……charge cards, to-do lists or perhaps even squabbling relatives.

Do I think we should not mourn our losses, plan our holidays, buy presents for others or ditch mean Aunt Harriet? Absolutely not! I for one wouldn’t get through the holiday without my lists. And who doesn’t like presents? And as for the relatives, well there will always be (at least) one relative that drives you crazy….. I’m just sayin’….

If we can just focus on the

Giver of Joy

and allow Him to be in control-

not our lists,
nor our calendars,
our problems…..

not even our crazy relatives,

I think we can find Joy in the midst of
whatever else is going on in our lives!

Jesus was born into this dark world so that all could experience joy.

We release

JOY

into our lives when we have a thankful heart.

Rather than a
euphoric feeling or emotion caused by something external,

I think joy is a deep feeling of

fullness or satisfaction

that comes from within.

It's a heart-thing!

So don’t let the complications of life

or a hectic holiday rush

steal your joy.

Stop complaining

and

start praising.

AND

This

Christmas,

And why not use this holiday season to create a new habit of reaching out to others, especially those who may be having a difficult time.

There are as many creative ways to be a blessing to others as there are people in need of a blessing.

Blessing others is a great way to experience Joy!

Don’t let Christmas become more of a hassle than a blessing.

Don’t just endure the Christmas Holiday~

Enjoy it!

New Places to Call Home....

Andrew has had a lot of wonderful help to get
his mountain house ready to move in to.

His buddies from work helped to get a new roof on this fall.
Now he has the remaining outside finishes to complete...
Maybe next year!

This fall, Andrew moved into his Man Cave!

Miranda and Steve got themselves a fixer upper too!

Steve Miranda and Jack moved into their new
house just days before the baby came.

They had lots of helpers too, a.k.a. parents and grandparents!!!!!!

A Huge Thank-You to all of you who helped with these endeavors!!!

Family Gatherings

On Labor Day Weekend, the Luckies and Myers'
came together for a baby baptism at the same little
chapel where Miranda and Steve were married.

A Sweet Meeting

Recently, my daughter and I went to Menno Haven, a beautiful retirement community in Chambersburg.

Menno Haven is where my Great Aunt Rhea and Uncle Dale live. They have a lovely home in the independent living community there.

The purpose of our visit was to introduce my granddaughter, Rhea, to Aunt Rhea- her namesake. Aunt Rhea is a sweet Christian woman who models the Titus 2 woman...the kind of woman I aspire to be one day.

It was a sweet meeting of the Rheas.

We tried to get a group shot of Miranda and the kids with Aunt Rhea...But they weren't very cooperative!

It was a beautiful Fall day, so we put on their jackets and took the kiddos for a stroll around the campus-Aunt Rhea was our tour guide.

When our tour of the facility was complete we headed to lunch at the local Panera before we had to say our good-byes.

It was a special day...

with some special people (who I love dearly)..

Hubs and I fight over our favorite section.

Yep, believe it or not, we both enjoy the same section of this huge paper.

Winter Daze

Okay...I know the calendar says

But at our house

WINTER HAS ARRIVED!

I took this pic at the beginning of the storm Saturday.
If you look closely, you can see the chickies in the portable
chicken house under the trees. By storms end the bows
were hanging VERY low. But the girls were just fine!

I did some blogging and scrapbooking during the storm, while Hubs did some woodworking (more on this project later).....

...that is until we lost power!

Then there was nothing to do but gaze out the window.

After about 4 hours power was restored at our house. But our daughter and son in law were not as lucky (even though their last name is Luckie..he he)

So they loaded up the babies and came over for a sleep over.

Gratitude journal Entry #6 I'm alive!...and a car love story!

On Wednesday, I left the YMCA and was going to the local library. I had stopped at a stop sign and proceeded through the intersection. I had almost made it through when I heard that familiar crashing noise and before I knew what hit me, I was spinning in a circle. I hit the brake and was stopped by the sidewalk curb.

Don't get alarmed. It was just a fender-bender. But at the moment is seemed much bigger. I wasn't injured, and neither was the woman who hit me.

PRAISE!!

But my poor blackponi wasn't as fortunate.

I'm ssooo thankful that this accident was just a fender-bender and not something much worse....

No one was hurt....PTL!

I have to tell you though..

I love this car.

I almost can't look at her boo boo!

I know I know..

You're thinking Its just a car! ...

a material possesion.

But it isn't just a car to me.

She's a symbol of so much more.

You see, as a teenager, my folks bought me my first car from the car auction. It looked something like this...

It was a 1969 fast back Mustang. It was used hard. And of course my car wasn't quite as nice as the one in the picture above. It had a ton of mechanical problems.

But...it was my first car...

near and dear to my heart.

Fast forward to 2003...

Rumor had it that Ford would be making a retro style Mustang.

Yea!!!

I had seen pictures, and was anxious to see the real deal.

It was in 2003, that I was diagnosed with Leukemia (AML).

I spent many months in the hospital getting Chemo to kill off the blood cells and then wait for my blood count come back.

It was a difficult time. And when the blood count numbers would bottom out, I would get to feeling really whimpy.

It was then, that my sweet husband would talk me through it. At one point, he promised to buy me a new Mustang if I got better.

Well, I did get better!

AND

He bought me my dream car!

See, I told you she was more than just a car.

She's a symbol of

Hope.....

Recovery....

and a husband's LOVE!

A Household Tip

Some time ago, Aunt Ruthie from Sugar Pie Farmhouse, had a post on Facebook where she asked her followers to share their favorite little household tip.

Her tip was to keep a stash of extra garbage bags in the bottom of the trash can. I've been a homemaker for 30+ years and I thought I knew it all, and had seen it all! On those few occasions when one the men at my house empties the trash, I always have to remind them to replace the trash bag. I always kid them that any man can take out the trash but only "real men" replace the bag!!

What a handy little tip!

So I have a handy little tip for you today!

At our house, you will find 2 towels hanging on the oven door. One is a pretty t-towel for drying dishes (the one with the rooster), and one for drying hands.

But for some reason, the men in my house can't seem to get that straight. Without fail, they will wash their (filthy) dirty hands in the kitchen sink and wipe whatever dirt that is left on their hands onto the pretty t-towel.

Sooooo......

I took some old towels and cut them in half and ran the frayed edges through the sewing machine.

Now this sits on the counter near the sink....

These towels come in handy for drying dirty hands...

wiping up spills.....

even cleaning messy (but adorable) faces!!!

Oh how I love to re purpose stuff,
giving new life to something old!

Living among the alpacas were several llamas that serve as "sheep dog."

It was a beautiful fall day and I found the time spent at the farm to be very relaxing !! These sweet 4-legged creatures just had the ability to make you forget about everything else.

Make Your Own Red Robin Seasoning

Good Morning Bloggers! My poor blog gets very neglected because I its priority is usually very low on my list. So this morning, I decided I would start my (rainy) day doing something I enjoy.

So here goes.....

I thought I'd share a recipe today...

I love Red Robin Fries. And their seasoning for the fries is wonderful. If you Google Red Robin Seasoning, you'll find a recipe that uses Knorr Tomato soup mix. That didn't sound too appealing to me. But this recipe fit the bill...and it can be made organically if you choose.

Red Robin Seasoning

Begin with a half- to a full box of salt

Add to that.......

1 oz chili powder

1/2 oz pepper

2 oz garlic
powder

2 oz red
cayenne pepper

Very pretty-huh?
This would make a lovely gift
gift to give.

SHAKE!

Pour into a shaker

Here's a tip- Because I like to keep things organized, I created a label with the ingredients of my seasoning so when it gets empty, I don't have to search for the recipe. (I do the same thing for my homemade laundry detergent)

My son puts this on EVERYTHING! I use it mostly for potatoes...any kind of potatoes.

Gratitude Journal Entry-Entry #6

This post is over due.

(It's rather lengthy, so grab a cup of Joe! I've included lots of pictures to keep your attention!)

I've been pondering it for weeks now. But like you, I've been busy with life. When I awoke this morning to the booming and banging of thunder, I saw it as a sign to sit down, gather my thoughts and share this story that overwhelms me with gratitude and thankfulness.

About 3 weeks ago, Tropical Storm Lee cruised through our area drowning us in flood waters, and for some, much devastation and a messy cleanup. My neighborhood received approximately 10 inches of rain over just a few days.

The Susquehanna River flows through Harrisburg (our closest and largest Metropolis). Many streams and creeks can be found in this area as well. They all flooded their banks!

The good news for me is that we live in the country away from any low places near a river, creek or stream. So we were unaffected by the flood waters.

And for this I am thankful!!

Others were not as fortunate as you can see by these photos. These are not my photos. Some were taken by my friend George, while others were posted on local media outlets. Most of these photos were taken around the city of Harrisburg and the Susquehanna River. (click to enlarge)

The red brick building and the black building in the background of this picture is the Harrisburg Hospital. This is where I began treatment for leukemia 8 years ago (almost to the day). I had one of those rooms at the very top where you can see the white pillars. It was a room with a (beautiful) view.

I'm in remission now, so for that I am sooo grateful!

The Hershey area was hit hard. Flash floods hammered the area of Hershey Park, devastating businesses, highways and even parts of Hershey Park. Yes, I'm talking about THE Hershey, the Sweetest Place on Earth.

The sweetest place on earth quickly turned sour when flood waters forced the care takers at Zoo America to euthanize 2 bison trapped in the flood waters. A creek meanders through the park and zoo. The creek is usually a source of joy because it's filled with large fish that children can observe and feed. (for a small fee;) But as you can see on this video, there was nothing but devastation surrounding this creek! (Warning-this is very disturbing video)

And Roads are being restored........

Their task is huge. As I sit here, all nestled in from the elements of this day, I feel grateful, and at the same time I can't help but feel sad. Sad for those who are in this position of cleaning out their homes, sorting through their worldly possessions and cleaning up the muck and the stench left behind. And many are trying to figure out how to do get it all done, and paying for all the expense. My prayers go out for them. May they have the strength and courage needed to get through these difficult times. May they think to pray to the God who loves them for He hears our prayers. And may He be Glorified when they see their prayers being answered!

I'm leaving you with much to think about and reflect on today....

I can't believe it's Fall!

I look forward to this time of year....

It's my favorite.

I especially love the aromas coming from the kitchen. Apple, cinnamon, pumpkin............need I say more?

But there is one thing this fall that I'm not liking so much...

Yep, my chickens are molting. The girls are a nasty looking sight. And to make matters worse, they have slowed down their egg production. Now I ask....How will I get all my fall baking done without those beautiful fresh eggs!?!?!

Fall really is my very favorite time of year. I love to bake and decorate for fall. So stay tuned for several Autumn-ish posts over the next few weeks.

And before I say so long on this first day of fall, I just want to share with you something near and dear to my heart. And that is that this (month of September) is

Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month.

I am a 7 year survivor of acute myelogenous leukemia. And I can attest on behalf of all leukemia patients that the best way anyone can support patients suffering with this horrific disease is to

give blood.

Without blood donors, I would surely not be here today.

Getting Organized

Our lives today are very busy. Regardless of where you are in life, there are many demands that seem to pull us in all directions. Finding a way to squeeze everything into a 24 hour day, and live a balanced life can be quite challenging. For me, trying to keep things simple and organized is how I manage to get the most out of my 24 hours. And having a plan is key. Scripture tells us that People without a plan perish! (Proverbs 29:18)

This is the time of the year when I begin some planning. While most folks may think of a new year as the time to set some plans and goals, this too is a great time for planning. Summer is winding down and I looking forward to the end of the canning and freezing season and the beginning of my favorite time of year. For many, children are going back to school or a new homeschool year is on the horizon. It’s a time for planning some fall cleaning (and decorating) and gathering ideas perhaps on the holidays that will be here before you know it. If you are at all like me, there is planning to do for the Christmas holidays. Many of my gifts are homemade and can’t wait until the last minute, so planning ahead is necessary!

I’ve been enjoying 100 Ways to Simplify Your Life, by Joyce Meyer. I highly recommend it. It makes a great daily devotional book. Chapter 60 is about getting organized.

In it, Joyce opens the chapter with this quote:

“Don’t agonize. Organize.”

Doesn’t that just sum things up perfectly?

Don’t agonize.

Get organized.

Prioritize.

Have a plan.

Eliminate those things that can be eliminated. And perhaps even designate chores to others. (Children NEED chores!)
Pray...Let God guide you

And avoid time wasters (like T.V.)

Everyone has their own way of getting (and staying) organized. In this electronic age, many use their computer and or a Blackberry. If that works for you-GREAT! But I’m an old fashioned girl, and I like to write things down…and I especially like keeping lists that I can cross off those things that I’ve accomplished. It helps me see my progress, especially on days when I feel as though I’m just spinning my wheels.

An Outdoor Adventure, a History Lesson, and a Whole Lot o' Shakin' Goin' On!

Tuesday was a gorgeous day here in S. Central Pa.

I had decided to pick up my niece and nephew and spend the day with them since I don't see them very often. They live very close by, but you know how it is. Our lives are busy-too busy!

Our first stop on our little adventure was Thornwald Park. Thornwald is a town Park. Its just a green place (with both woods and meadow), a gazebo, an amphitheater, and some park benches and picnic tables. On the property is an old mansion that is currently under renovation. With the exception of the construction noise, it is a very peaceful place on the fringe of town.

Nestled in the woods of Thornwald, is a geocache. So I thought it was a great place for some hiking and to turn these two young people on to the sport of geocaching.

After a bit of searching, we found the geocache treasure. Wedged between 2 rocks was an old lemonade container wrapped in camouflage tape. Inside most every geocache is a sign in sheet and if possible, some trinkets that people leave behind. The rule of thumb is that if you take a trinket, you must leave one behind. We signed the paper inside and left behind a small turkey feather even though we didn't take anything from the cache.

We placed the cache back the way we found it and headed to the local grocery store to grab some goods for a picnic lunch. From there, we put the top down on the Mustang and headed up the mountain (with the wind blowin' through our hair)!

In about 15 minutes, we arrived at Pine Grove State Park, a sweet place for hanging out in the summer time. As the name implies, there are lots of pines, as well as 2 man made lakes and an old iron furnace. But there is much more. Pine Grove is rich in history. The lakes were once iron ore pits that were mined and then melted in the furnace. There are several furnaces along the South Mountain. This chain of furnaces played an important role in the Underground Railroad.

(Keep in mind that on the other side of this mountain is Gettysburg!)

I tried to slip in a history lesson about the area during lunch (at the Furnace picnic grounds). But I'm sure the ol' (retired) homeschool mom in me was shining through.

Though we didn't go swimming. We did visit the lakes and take time to do some snooping around. These kids live about 10 minutes away but had never been here. (at least not that they could recall)

Our day concluded as we meandered a little further down the road to my daughter's new home. I wanted to show the kids my new grandbaby!

THE HOUSE BEGAN TO SHAKE!

YES, it was that infamous earthquake that shook the East Coast. About 2 seconds later, my son in law phoned to report that he too had felt it at his job (in Gettsyburg)!

After some smooches for the wee one, we headed next door to a popular ice cream stop....
And with cones in hand, we headed home....our bellies full......
and our feet tired.

The wreath was prepared several weeks ahead, when we didn't know if the baby was a girl or a boy. So the onesies are unisex. I did add 2 little girl outfits to the wreath before giving it to her. I couldn't resist shopping for a little girl!

Movie Monday- Ice Ice Baby

Our little Jack recently discovered the ice dispenser in the fridge. So now every time I fill up his sippy cup, he says "ice, ice." Of course the first thing that comes to my mind is the old (nasty) song by Vanilla Ice, Ice-Ice- Baby. So I sing that song back to him. Well, being the quick learner that he is, he is now singing his own rendition of Ice- Ice Baby. Check it out........

I convinced hubs to go to the theatre to see The Help the other night. I think this movie is more of a chick flick. (There's no blood or violence!) But I think he enjoyed it as well. It was very thought provoking.

Gratitude Journal Entry #4

I have much to be grateful for this morning as I reflect on the events of yesterday. Yesterday morning I went to the Y to teach my two water aerobics classes that I normally teach once or twice each week. But yesterday's classes were nowhere near "normal." During the deep water class, one of the participants blacked out and went face down in the water. Though she is a woman of a mature age, she is probably the best swimmer in the class. Fortunately, the woman next her (who was a retired nursing home nurse) saw what was happening and quickly, with the help of some others pulled her to the deck where the lifeguard and I lifted her on to the deck.

Today I am thankful, firstly, that God was watching over us. I'm thankful for those who acted quickly. And I'm very thankful that my friend (at last check) was doing well.

Praises!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm also thankful for the rain shower we had yesterday. Much needed. And today the whole earth rejoices!

Blessings to you all.........I'm off to spend the day with my favorite little red head, for which I'm also grateful !!!!!!

Scavenger Hunt/Migraine Guard

Have you heard of GEOCACHING?

Have you ever gone GEOCACHING?

I have known about geocaching for some time now

but just recently decided to finally take the time to investigate.

So after searching the geocache website, we decided to give it a try. We started simple and very close to home. The geocache we chose was entitled

Migraine Guard. I downloaded the info from the website onto our GPS (easy peasy) and off we went.

Here's what we found....

Our GPS took us to this bridge (and excellent fishing hole)....

We searched for the cache and found it (as the title implies) in the end of this guard rail.

The cache was actually an aspirin bottle.

Tucked inside the bottle was a piece of paper to sign and verify you found the cache (not to be confused with cash).

If you have never heard of geocaching, you can find out more about it here. It's a scavenger hunt of sorts. It's for individuals and families; it's for the young and old alike. The geocaches range from easy to find, to more difficult to find- easy terrain to difficult terrain. Check it out! Give it a try!

I'd love to hear about your geocache experiences!

In case you're wondering, we used the hand held GPS (Garmin rino) that my husband uses for hunting in the mountains of Virginia. In my opinion, this is a complicated piece of equipment. However, it was fairly easy to use after downloading the data from the internet.

Last week, I ordered this Geomate Jr. It is specifically for geocaching. When you turn it on, it immediately gives you the closest caches. I'll keep you posted on how this works. I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. I am hoping to get it and use it over the 4th of July weekend.

And speaking of anxiously awaiting a new arrival.....we are getting anxious for the arrival of our 2nd grandbaby. Can't wait!

Scrappy Saturday- Road Trip

Today's Scrappy pages are from a little road trip hubs and I took two summers ago. We didn't go far...just over the mountain to Adams County (near Gettysburg.) We spent a beautiful sunny day driving around with no agenda, just soaking up the beautiful scenery and stopping at random places.
